The Natural Phenomenon
Behind SkyCool

Radiative cooling is happening everywhere, all the time. SkyCool lets you control it.

Everywhere, all the time

The Earth is warmed by the sun, and radiates heat into the atmosphere and to space

Frost can form at night even when the air isn’t freezing. Surfaces facing the sky are cooled below the ambient air by radiating heat to space, causing moisture in the air to condense on the surfaces, in some cases even freezing.

With SkyCool

Nightime cooling, 24 hours a day

By reflecting nearly all the heat from the sun, and radiating more heat to space, SkyCool stays cooler than that air around it 24 hours a day. That cooling effect can be harnessed to cool buildings and systems.

How SkyCool Works

Putting the Cool in SkyCool

Reflection

The most important feature of SkyCool Film is its incredibly high reflectivity. That is what prevents it from getting hot when under sun. SkyCool Film reflects nearly all of the visible and UV light that makes other outdoor objects, like roofs or people, hot.

Radiation

The big difference between SkyCool and regular reflective materials, is that SkyCool is also a “selective emitter”. Meaning, while all objects emit infrared radiation (heat), SkyCool emits infrared strongly in a specific band (8-13 microns) that isn’t absorbed by the gasses that make up our atmosphere.

This means that SkyCool radiates more heat to space than other materials. That keeps SkyCool cooler than other materials.

Duration

It's not cool if it doesn't last. SkyCool's products are engineered for the durability required in their respective applications: Roofing and Process Cooling.

White paints and flimsy, metallic films begin to lose their reflective and radiant qualities far too soon to be installed in long-term applications.

The paper that launched a new paradigm

Our paper describing Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling has become among the most cited in the field of Physics.

Through ongoing R&D, we continue to push performance, drive down cost, and expand applicability of this breakthrough idea.

the data

Only SkyCool can cool something to colder than the ambient

...without evaporation or compression. SkyCool Panel's mix of reflection, radiation, and convection allow you to do things legacy technologies can't.

Where SkyCool Comes From

SkyCool Film is the core technology behind both SkyCool Roof and SkyCool Panels.

SkyCool Film is created by laminating specialized plastics carefully selected for their radiance and reflectivity when deployed in combination with each other.

SkyCool Film, SkyCool Roof, and SkyCool panels are manufactured in the United States, PFAS-free.

It only took 2,000 years

SkyCool harnesses a natural phenomenon that was first used thousands of years ago to make ice at night in the desert. Using materials science and mechanical engineering in a lab at Stanford, we created radiative cooling products that work 24 hours a day, without electricity. Our discovery led to one of the most cited papers in Physics, and a killer TED Talk.

A world-changing breakthrough

Refrigeration was invented in 1834. The world has been waiting a long time for a new way to cool off.

what this COULD mean

SkyCool directly combats Global Warming

When a SkyCool installation removes heat from a building, it also removes it from the planet. It doesn't blow it into the outside air like most cooling systems.

There are many ways to combat climate change, and we need most of them if we are going to keep our planet stable. SkyCool stands out by addressing heat directly, rather than indirectly by reducing emissions of heat trapping gasses. With enough SkyCool, it is possible to stay under 1.5°C global average temperature increase.

The SkyCool team comes to work everyday to serve our customers, and to help our customers save our planet.
